Volgograd is a Russian ancient city with a rich history. It is situated in the south of the European part of Russia. There are numerous monuments of spiritual and material culture, the monuments reflecting different stages of historical development of this unique city.
The city was born 400 years ago on the place where large Russian rivers Volga and Don approach to each other. In 1589 Russian czar Ivan the Terrible orders to build the fortress-town on the bank of Volga. The town was named "Czariczin".
The WW II stopped this development and destroyed almost completely this city on the Volga. The Battle of Stalingrad began on July 17 in 1942 and finished on February, 2 in 1943. This battle was the turning point in the Great Patriotic War and brought in Victory over Germany army. The Battle of Stalingrad is considered in the world history as an example of heroic battle for native land.
Numerous monuments in Volgograd remind of this stage. First there is the memorial ensemble Mamaev Hill which is the symbol of the city. The statue of Mother Land which is 52 meters high crowns the composition of the ensemble. This statue is one of the biggest monuments in the world.
After the war the ruined city had been rebuilt quickly. Mira Street was the first of rebuilt streets and the main of the city.
Now the city is 80 km long and numbers about 1 million residents. Volgograd is a very beautiful green and hospitable city. Well-furnished quay, "dressed" in concrete, marble and granite, verdure of squares and flower beds enlarge each year.
Volgograd is situated in zone of steppe so the climate here is continental: winters are cold and summers are hot. But you can forget the summer heat in verdure of numerous squares and parks. Gold sandy beaches of Volga are the integral part of summer city landscape. Modern comfortable cutters make fascinating promenade along Volga, one of the largest river in Europe.
